Tiznow becomes the first repeat winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic

Breeders' Cup Notes and Trivia

Dateline: 10/31/01

Tiznow became the fifth horse to win two Breeders’ Cup races. He is the first to win the Classic twice, and is the fourth back-to-back Breeders’ Cup winner. Da Hoss won the Mile twice, but not in consecutive years.

  • Tiznow (Classic, 2000-01)
  • Da Hoss (Mile, 1996, 1998)
  • Lure (Mile, 1992-93)
  • Bayakoa (Distaff, 1989-90)
  • Miesque (Mile, 1987-88)

Tiznow passed 1998 Classic winner Awesome Again as the all-time money winner in Breeders’ Cup history with his second Classic victory in as many years. He earned $2,480,400 last year, and another $2,080,000 this year for a total of $4,560,400. Spain, runner-up in the Distaff, moved into ninth on the all-time list. She earned $1,227,200 for last year’s triumph and $472,000 for second this year for a combined $1,699,200 – the highest total for a non-Classic participant.

The Classic, won by Tiznow with Sahkee second, was the 11th Breeders’ Cup race decided by a nose.

  • 2001 Classic (Tiznow over Sahkee)
  • 2000 Juvenile (Macho Uno over Point Given)
  • 1998 Distaff (Escena over Banshee Breeze)
  • 1996 Classic (Alphabet Soup over Louis Quatorze)
  • 1993 Distaff (Hollywood Wildcat over Paseana)
  • 1992 Turf (Fraise over Sky Classic)
  • 1988 Distaff (Personal Ensign over Winning Colors)
  • 1987 Classic (Ferdinand over Alysheba)
  • 1987 Juvenile Fillies (Epitome over Jeanne Jones)
  • 1985 Juvenile (Tasso over Storm Cat)
  • 1984 Sprint (Eillo over Commemorate)

Classic runner-up Sahkee was the eighth Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner to compete in the Breeders’ Cup, but first to run in a race other than the Turf. He also was the third Arc winner to finish second. No Arc winner has won a Breeders’ Cup race.

Unbridled Elaine completed a third generation Breeders’ Cup triple with her victory in the Distaff. Her sire, Unbridled’s Song, won the 1995 Juvenile. Unbridled, the sire of Unbridled’s Song, won the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Classic. And, all three victories came at Belmont Park.

Five Breeders’ Cup winners and three runner-ups became millionaires as a result of their performances Saturday: Unbridled Elaine (1st, Distaff, $1,743,390); Banks Hill (1st, Filly & Mare Turf, $1,184,833), Forbidden Apple (2nd, Mile, $1,166,300); Val Royal (1st, Mile, $1,108,444); Spook Express (2nd, Filly & Mare Turf, $1,085,670); Squirtle Squirt (1st, Sprint, $1,067,220); Milan (2nd, Turf, $1,064,846), and Johannesburg (1st, Juvenile, $1,004,758).

Banks Hill’s 5 ½-length victory in the Filly & Mare Turf is tied for seventh as the largest margin of victory in a Breeders’ Cup race. Inside Information holds the mark with a 13 ½-length triumph in the 1995 Distaff at Belmont.

Jockey Jerry Bailey equaled his 1999 and 2000 record of riding in each Breeders’ Cup race.

Jockeys Jerry Bailey (Sprint, Squirtle Squirt) and Pat Day (Distaff, Unbridled Elaine) notched their 12th Breeders’ Cup wins – tops among all jockeys. Chris McCarron took sole possession of third when Tiznow captured the Classic for his ninth Breeders’ Cup victory. Day remains the top money-earner among jockeys with $21,717,800.

David Flores (Juvenile Fillies, Tempera), Mick Kinane (Juvenile, Johannesburg), Olivier Peslier (Filly & Mare Turf, Banks Hill) and Jose Valdivia Jr. (Mile, Val Royal) collected their first Breeders’ Cup wins.

For only the second time in Breeders’ Cup history, only one favorite won on the Championship program. Fantastic Light, at odds of $1.40-to-1, won the Turf. In 1989, Distaff winner Bayakoa, at odds of $.70-to-1, was the lone favorite to win that day.

Johannesburg and jockey Michael Kinane take their walk down Victory Lane after winning the Juvenile.

Johannesburg is the sixth horse to remain undefeated after winning a Breeders’ Cup race. The others were Personal Ensign (‘88), Meadow Star (‘90), Gilded Time (‘92), Flanders (‘94) and Favorite Trick (‘97).

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas extended his record number of starters in the Breeders’ Cup to 135. He has had at least one top-three finish in all but two of the 18 Breeders’ Cups held (1990 and ‘92).

Julio Canani is the fourth trainer to win the Mile twice. He becomes the 11th trainer to win any Breeders’ Cup race twice.

Jay Robbins joins Hall of Famer Charlie Whittingham as the only trainer to win the Classic twice. Whittingham won with Ferdinand (’87) and Sunday Silence (’89).

Four trainers won for the first time in 2001. Bobby Frankel (1-for-42), Eoin Harty (1-for-5), Dallas Stewart (1 for 1), Aidan O’Brian (1 for 14).

Spook Express is the first South African-bred to have started in a Breeders’ Cup race.
