Breeders' Crown Entries

Honorary Drawmasters Lennox Lewis, boxing's heavyweight champion of the world, and Glen Grunwald, General Manager of the Toronto Raptors, presided of the post position draws for the 3-year-old Trot and Pace.

Dateline: 10/15/02

North America's best two and three year old harness horses will gather at Woodbine on Saturday night for the Breeders' Crown. Like its Thoroughbred counterpart, the Breeders' Cup, the Breeders' Crown was instituted by the Hambletonian Society in 1984 with the objective of stimulating public awareness of racing and uniting the sport's stars in a finale to the racing season, settling the year-end championships on the track. Because there are so many divisions in harness racing, the older horse events are held at the Meadowlands at the end of July while the 2 and 3 year old events are only now being contested.

Although all the races are headliners, the main events will be the 3-year-old colt and geldings Trot with a purse of $861,111 and Pace with a purse of $793,650. Kadabra, a son of Primrose Lane trained by Jimmy Takter, is the 7-5 morning line favorite for the Trot despite drawing post number 8. He is closely followed by 2-1 second choice Like A Prayer, breaking from post 7, who has been his rival several times this year. This race will be the fourth event on the card with a post time of 8:28pm.

Red River Hanover winning the North America Cup over Mach Three and McArdle.

The Pace will be the ninth race with a post time of 10:45pm and features four millionaire equines. McArdle, coming in off a five race win streak, will take on the Bill Robinson trained Art Major, Mach Three, and Red River Hanover. Art Major, winner of the fastest elimination, is a narrow favorite at 9-5, followed by McArdle at 5-2, Mach Three at 7-2, and Red River Hanover at 6-1. Last time they met at Woodbine, Red River Hanover came out on top with Mach Three second and McArdle third in the North America Cup.

Cameron Hall, winner of last year's 2-year-old Filly Trot, is back again as the favorite in the 3-year-old Filly Trot.
The richest race of the night is the $943,809 2-Year-Old Colt Pace, slated for 9:18 pm. Allamerican Native , a winner of his elim in 1:51.2, is the lukewarm 3-1 choice in the highly-competitive dash. The $861,111 Three-Year-Old Filly Trot at 9:45 pm is headed by last year's Breeders Crown champion Cameron Hall at 3-1 while Hambletonian Oaks winner Windylane Hanover is at 4-1. Worldly Beauty is the overwhelming 4-5 choice in the $793,650 Three-Year-Old Filly Pace at 10:15 pm. A winner in 10 of her 12 starts this year, including a 1:51.4 elim and almost $1.5 million in career earnings, Worldly Beauty suffered her only defeat in seven starts last year when finishing fourth in the Breeders Crown, as she was unable to overcome post 10.

Here are the fields for all the races with post position and morning line odds. Check back on Sunday for results and photos from all the races.
