Captain Steve upsets Golden Missile in the Kentucky Cup Classic
The first of two big Breeders' Cup Classic preps to run today was the Kentucky Cup Classic at Turfway Park where Golden Missile was sent off the 1.40-1 favorite. He was trying to recapture his winning form from earlier in the year after a sub-par effort last out in the Whitney. Captain Steve, the lone 3-year-old in the field, had other plans. Never placed worse than second through the entire race, he duelled briefly with Golden Missile until he got his measure early in the stretch run then drew off to win by 3/4 of a length. Early Pioneer made a late run to get up for third 4 1/2 lengths behind Golden Missile. Rize contested the pace for the first half before fading out of it while second favorite Cat Thief never got into the race and finished last nearly 18 lengths behind the winner.

Woodward Stakes

Lemon Drop Kid duels Behrens to the wire in the Woodward
Lemon Drop Kid continued his dominance of the handicap division today with a gritty victory over a determined Behrens in the Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park. The pair duelled for nearly the last half of the race and were head to head for the entire stretch run with neither giving ground. Lemon Drop Kid hung on gamely to win by a head, stamping an early claim on the year end championship. 41-1 shot Gander surprised by running a competitive third only 3/4 of a length behind the top two while Skimming and Ecton Park turned in rather dull efforts.

Lemon Drop Kid has two more starts planned before he retires to stud at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky for a $100,000 fee. Those race are the Grade 1, $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont on October 14th and the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on November 4th.
