Labor Day this year will mark the fourth annual one day celebration of racing called America's Day at the Races. It will showcase racing at tracks across the country and will include lots of special events in an effort to bring in new fans to the sport. There will also be a special America's Pick 3 wager on the Del Mar Handicap at Del Mar, The Diana Handicap at Saratoga and the Arlington Matron Handicap at Arlington International. You may want to check out Glenners' picks for this one. Another big event for Labor Day is the $2 million All-American Futurity for the 2 year old Quarter Horses at Ruidoso Downs which will be simulcast to most locations.
This the perfect day to bring your friends and family to the races and introduce them to our great sport. Take time to explain how things work and about the different people involved in getting a horse to the races. Show them the horses in the paddock and explain how to make a wager. Make it an enjoyable experience instead of the confusing one it is for many new patrons at the track.
On America's Day, host tracks will have all kinds of freebies and activities planned. Events scheduled are Kid's Derby, decorate the horseshoe, pony rides, jockey T-shirt toss, jockey for a day, name the yearling contest, celebrity autograph sessions, and shoeing demonstrations. Many tracks will be giving away coloring books, posters, T-shirts, photos, free or reduced price admission, and other prizes. Check here for a list of participating tracks and see what events your local track has planned to celebrate the day.
If you can't make it to the track and you would like to print your own race horse coloring book, TOBA has it online to download here.
