Labor Day this year will bring the first edition of a one day celebration of racing in America. America's Day at the Races will showcase racing at 21 tracks across the country in an effort to bring in new fans to the sport. The event is also sponsored by 15 racing organizations and will be televised from 5-5:30 pm EDT on ESPN2.
The event is being promoted as the day to bring a friend to the races and introduce them to our great sport. Take time to explain how things work and about the different people involved in getting a horse to the races. Show them the horses in the paddock and explain how to make a wager. Make it an enjoyable experience instead of the confusing one it is for many new patrons at the track.
On America's Day, host tracks will have coupons for for concession and admission discounts, merchandise giveaways, and free wagers. There will be a fair atmosphere with exhibits from horsemen's groups, farriers, etc. and a "name that yearling" contest for kids 12 and under with the unnamed yearling on display. Local racing stars will be available to sign autographs and there will be a jockey T-shirt toss where the jockeys throw free shirts to the fans prior to each race. There will also be a coast-to-coast Pick-3 with a special low take-out at all participating tracks on the Miss Woodford Stakes from Monmouth Park, the Springfield Stakes at Arlington International, and Del Mar Derby.
