Metro Pace and Canadian Pacing Derby

Real Desire is the favorite for the Canadian Pacing Derby.

Dateline: 08/28/02

Saturday night at Woodbine some of the best older pacers and the budding 2-year-old stars will come to compete in the Metro Pace and the Canadian Pacing Derby. Post time for the $845,500 Canadian Pacing Derby is 9:50pm EDT and post time for the $1,100,000 Metro Pace will be 10:46pm EDT. The Score will provide live coverage in Canada with a special two hour telecast from 9:00 - 11:00pm EDT.

In the Canadian Pacing Derby for the older horses, Real Desire will attempt to stretch out his lead in the race for year-end honors in both the U.S. and Canada. With an outstanding 7 for 9 record this year including victories in the Breeders' Crown and U.S. Pacing Championships, he is listed as the prohibitive 3-5 favorite on the morning line and will start

from post three. In his elimination heat last Saturday, Real Desire finished more than a second faster (final time of 1:50) than the other heat's final time. Regular driver John Campbell will be in the sulky for trainer Blair Burgess and co-owners Brittany Farms, Perretti Farms, Robert Burgess and Karin Olsson Burgess. Attempting to play the role of giant killer in the field of ten will be such notables as Four Starzzz Shark, who defeated Real Desire in the William Haughton Stakes at the Meadowlands, and Camotion, the second leading money earner in the field and runner-up just behind Real Desire in last year's Breeders' Crown.

The Metro Pace, in contrast, features the stars of tomorrow - the 2 year old pacing colts. The lukewarm 3-1 favorite is Lasting Luck, who drew the tough outside post but who is a perfect three for three, capped off by winning the fastest of the three elimination heats last Saturday. Luc Ouellette will drive the son of Cams Card Shark for trainer Ed Hart and owner Jeffrey Snyder. Trainer Bob McIntosh sends out three of his charges hoping to finally break his winless streak in the race having sent fifteen horses to the Metro Pace final over the years but coming home empty handed each time. One of his entrants is the 9-2 second choice Keystone Rodeo, who gets four-time Metro winner John Campbell in the sulky and brings a record of two wins and two seconds in five starts. Also at 9-2 on the morning line is Articulator with a 4 for 5 record, his lone defeat being a second place finish in his elimination heat. He is the second richest starter in the field with over $80,000 in earnings. Ironically, the leader in the field in starts, wins, money earned, and fastest time is a 12-1 longshot on the morning line, Sir Luck. He was second in his elimination and brings a solid 5 for 9 record and a whopping $243,076 in earnings to date.
