Dateline: 08/26/00
Unshaded finally proved himself by grinding down Albert the Great in the stretch to win the 131st Travers Stakes at Saratoga. Ever since his impressive win in the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland in April people had been hyping him as one of the better 3 year olds, but he was unable to draw in the Kentucky Derby field and then disappointed as the favorite in the Peter Pan and Jim Dandy seeming to lack that final closing punch. Today he got the job done in a long stretch duel with Albert the Great to get up in the final strides. Belmont winner Commendable finished third in an even effort. Favorite Dixie Union ran 4th and probably suffered for being taken to the inside which was running very slow plus he lost his left front shoe in the race.
