The Travers Stakes

Dateline: 08/23/01

Results

The Travers Stakes at Saratoga, also known as the Mid-Summer Derby, run at 1 1/4 miles with a purse of $1 million will hold its 132nd running Saturday afternoon August 25th. This year's running has attracted a field of 9 three year olds, dominated by the Bob Baffert trained Point Given.

Point Given winner of the Preakness, Belmont, and Haskell will be the heavy favorite in the Travers
Point Given followed up his impressive wins in the Preakness and Belmont with a gritty win in the Haskell Invitational last out when not at 100% due to missed training from a foot abcess. He looks to be in top form this time and should be an overwhelming favorite. Trainer Bob Baffert said: "He was blowing hard after the Haskell. That was the first time he's gotten tired. He wasn't tired in the Belmont. I expect him to run so much better in the Travers than he did in the Haskell." Point Given will still race in a bar shoe as a precaution and extra protection for the foot that had the abcess.

Among those trying to defeat Point Given will be A P Valentine who finished second behind him in the Preakness and Belmont before finishing fourth to Scorpion in the Jim Dandy. Scorpion will be back again trying to complete the Jim Dandy - Travers double while Godolphin has entered Dwyer Stakes winner E. Dubai. You can view the full field below and link to a profile with full info about each.

Post time for the Travers is 5:45pm EDT and the race will be telecast, along with the King's Bishop Stakes, on ESPN from 4:30 to 6:00pm EDT. You can also catch the audio live online. Past performances will be available free from Daily Racing Form and Glenners will have his selections available late Friday.
