The opener of the Festival, the Beverly D., may be the youngest of the three Grade 1's that afternoon but it more than makes up for its lack of history in the quality of its fields. First run in 1987, it is one of the world's richest turf distaff races, shadowed only recently by the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.
The first running was won by Canadian filly, Dancing on a Cloud, owned by Sam-Son Farm who are again represented this year by Only To You. Since then, California connections have dominated the race including jockey Chris McCarron and trainer Charlie Whittingham who all have multiple winners. Undoubtedly the most emotional running was in 1991, when Fire the Groom won for trainer and retired jockey Bill Shoemaker, who was in a Denver hospital room after the automobile accident that left him paralyzed.

The race will be televised as part of a 90 minute broadcast on ESPN's "NTRA Racing to the Breeders' Cup" series on Saturday from 4:00-5:30pm Eastern time. The race may also be broadcast live online as part of the Emirates Racing Series broadcast of the Million. (Note: If the link on the Emirates/Sportal site doesn't work, try this).
