More Than Ready shows his disdain for the competition
The Haskell Invitational

Dateline: 08/03/00

RESULTS

The first of the two big $1 million mid-summer races for the 3 year olds is the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Sunday August 6th. This race will bring together several veterans of the Triple Crown Trail including Kentucky Derby runner-ups Impeachment and More Than Ready and Belmont winner Commendable. This should be a very interesting race with such a classy line-up.

Post time is 5:42 p.m. EDT. The race will be shown on ESPN2 on tape delay at 7pm EDT but you can listen live online with Real Audio. Past performances are available free from Daily Racing Form and Glenners will have selections available sometime Saturday.

The Haskell Invitational
Conditions: Grade 1, purse $1,000,000. By invitation only with no entry, nomination or starting fees at handicap weights. Coupled entry for Dogwood Stable of Commendable and Impeachment. Each name links to a profile of that horse.

Captain Steve comes in off a win in the Swaps Stakes in California
More Than Ready has been very consistent although he has yet to win a race this year, but his New Jersey based owners are hoping this race will be the one where he finally gets to the winner's circle. Pletcher will add blinkers for the first time which may help him keep his mind on running. Captain Steve won the Swaps Stakes last out and Baffert says he is ready for another good one here. Of course you have Impeachment who was second in the Derby and third in the Preakness who must be respected along with Belmont winner Commendable. Most of the rest are up and coming horses who could easily surprise with an in the money finish.

I will go with More Than Ready here as this seems to be his race. He has speed, the blinkers being added, home town connections, and even a weight break so this is his race to win. Second should be one of Captain Steve, Commendable, or Impeachment based on class.

Dixie Union in the Haskell post parade
Dixie Union won by 3/4 of a length with an impressive rally in the stretch. Captain Steve ran second most of the way behind the quick early pace set by Thistyranthasclass and looked a winner until Dixie Union got in gear. He still had enough left to hold second safe by a head over the other late closer Milwaukee Brew. More Than Ready stalked in fourth the whole way and came up empty in the stretch when asked to make a move. There was a jockey objection by Richard Migliore on More Than Ready against Captain Steve and Corey Nakatani over interference in the first turn, but it was disallowed.
