Trivia Contest Answers and Winners
Dateline: 07/17/99
Thank you to everyone who sent in answers for the trivia contest. Nobody got all 12 parts correct but two people got 11 correct answers. First to get her answers in was Margaret Amy Barnes of Oak Ridge, TN, who wins the Northern Dancer first day cover. Cheryl Hoye, also from Tennessee, also submitted 11 out of 12 correct answers but because I received Margaret's entry first she gets the prize. Congratulations to both of you though for having such good knowledge of racing history!
Here is a recap of all the questions with the correct answers:
- How old was jockey Johnny Longden when he retired from riding?
The book I took the question from said 59, but because another source also said 56 I accepted both ages as correct. - Saggy had two major accomplishments at the track. One was setting a new world record for 4 1/2 furlongs. What was the other and what was his biggest claim to fame off the track?
His other big accomplishment at the track was beating the great Citation. His claim to fame off the track was siring Kentucky Derby winner Carry Back. - Why was the location of the Breeders' Cup changed to Aqueduct in 1985 from the originally proposed location?
The trivia book I used for several of these questions gave this one with the following answer:The original location was to have been Arlington Park but it was was destroyed by fire so Aqueduct was selected as a replacement.
I have since found out from a couple of sources that this was an error and Aqueduct was the original choice. Sorry for the confusion! Eliminating this question does not change the results though since the winner sent her answers in on the first day. - Two very famous American horses won the last start of their career in Canada. One was Secretariat. Name the other.
Man O' War - What horse set a faster world record for 1 1/16 miles than he did for 1 mile 70 yards, a distance 40 yards shorter?
Swaps - Although most Breeders' Cup Juvenile winners have not generally had much luck racing as older horses, one was still winning stakes at age 5. Who was he?
Fly So Free who at age 5 won the grade 2 Fall Highweight Handicap. - Who trained the ill-fated Swale?
Woody Stephens - What race did Spend A Buck's owner elect to run him in instead of the Preakness and why?
He ran in the Jersey Derby instead because of a $2 million bonus he would get if he won it for sweeping a series of the Cherry Hill Mile, Garden State Stakes, Kentucky Derby, and the Jersey Derby. He won of course. - Who was the regular rider of Nashua?
Eddie Arcaro - D. Wayne Lukas has had many Breeders' Cup winners. Name the first horse he ran in a Breeders' Cup race and how did this horse finish?
He had Tank's Prospect in the very first Breeders' Cup race run, the Juvenile in 1984. He finished second to Chief's Crown.
