1999 Queen's Plate Entries
Dateline: 6/24/99
This year marks the 140th running of the Queen's Plate, Canada's premier race for 3 year olds at a mile and a quarter. The name of the race is a bit of a misnomer since the trophy isn't even a plate but a gold cup about a foot high. The purse is a bit odd too at $500,000 Canadian plus 50 Guineas (about $120). The 50 Guineas comes in the form of a draft from the Royal Privy Purse from the Queen's representative at the race since Guineas are not even minted any longer. Despite the race being limited to Canadian breds, some very nice horses have won in the past including Northern Dancer, Kennedy Road, With Approval, Isvestia, Dance Smartly, and Awesome Again.
This year's field is a large one with 17 entered, including 3 from Frank Stronach. Colts and geldings carry 126 lbs and fillies carry 121 lbs.
