The Queen's Plate Entries

Dateline: 06/22/00

Entries were drawn this morning for the 141st running of the Queen's Plate and a full field of 17 was entered. The Queen's Plate, which is restricted to Canadian bred 3 year olds, is Canada's version of the Kentucky Derby and is the 2nd oldest stakes race in North America. Although there are a few no-hopers who are in just so their owners can say they had a horse in the Queen's Plate in general it is a pretty competitive field.

Honorary drawmaster Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender and horse owner Curtis Joseph poses in front of the post position board with the Queen's Plate trophy.

Past performances are available for free online from the Daily Racing Form here in Adobe Acrobat PDF format along with the Thoro-Graph sheets and Glenner's Picks are available here. Post time is scheduled for 5:40 p.m. EDT. The race will be televised live in Canada on CTV from 4:30-6:00p.m. EDT, on tape delay on ESPN2's NTRA 2Day at the Races from 6:30-7:00 p.m. EDT, and unscrambled on satellite at Galaxy 3R, channel 18.

Pete's Sake
winning the Plate Trial

It is much easier to determine the throw-outs in this field than it is to pick a winner. To me the only real contenders for the win are: Allende, Bold n'Fancy, I and I, Pete's Sake, Runaway Love, Strike Smartly, and Wake at Noon. Wake at Noon is easily the fastest and quite possibly the classiest but can he go 10 furlongs? Strike Smartly showed great promise until his dull effort in the Plate Trial but I think he still deserves respect here. Of course you can't ignore Pat Day on Runaway Love. If you go on breeding and dosage, you have to like Allende who is by a Queen's Plate winner and has good stamina points, but the surface is a big question as he seems to prefer grass. Pete's Sake jumped up big time in the Plate Trial at long odds, but he had been facing open company in New York so perhaps he was better than he looked. The winner should be one of these and I am having a tough time deciding which I like best. Perhaps I will just select the longest odds from those and take a shot at an upset.
