1999 PreaknessDateline: 05/15/99
After all the problems last year, Pimlico was hoping for an uneventful Preakness day but that was not to be. The weather was gorgeous with sunny skies, temperatures in the 70's and nearly 100,000 people in attendance, but an incident in the 7th race, the Maryland Breeders' Cup Handicap, had everyone buzzing. As the horses were in deep stretch a fan got on the track and tried to take a punch at Artax or his jockey Jorge Chavez. He impeded Artax so badly that all wagers were refunded on him. Yes It's True was on the lead and avoided him and went on to win. Here is a set of photos that show the incident:
Despite winning the Kentucky Derby, Charismatic was still sent off at 8-1 odds while his fast closing rival Menifee went off as the favorite at 2-1. Vicar went to the front along with Kimberlite Pipe and Cat Thief, setting a fast early pace. Charismatic stayed in mid pack until late in the backstretch when he started his winning move. He circled the field to take the lead at the head of the stretch and drew off convincingly. Menifee and Badge closed in the stretch to finish 2nd and 3rd just noses apart.
