A field of ten is entered for the 128th running of the Preakness at Pimlico Racecourse on Saturday May 17, 2003. Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide is back to make a try for the second jewel of the Triple Crown along with three other Derby alumni: Peace Rules, Scrimshaw, and Ten Cents a Shine. Six new players entered the game to try and prove they belong in the top ranks of the 3-year-olds.

Jackson Knowlton, head of Sackatoga Stables, and Barclay Tagg, trainer of Funny Cide, were mobbed by the media after the post position draw.
Post positions for the Preakness were selected at a special event held at the ESPN Zone in downtown Baltimore. The order of selection was drawn earlier in the day at Pimlico so the connections had plenty of time to consider their choices.

Trainer Barclay Tagg said about Funny Cide: "He's doing very very well, he's just a marvellous horse, everything's going right so far, thank the Lord." When asked about the Derby photo incident, he said: "I felt sorry for Jose and his family, he's a world class rider and world class human being. It was just a big mistake, it shouldn't have happened. A sad situation that shouldn't have happened at all. If it sets up like it did at the Derby I'd be very happy but we just have to see what happens."

When asked about his post position choice for Scrimshaw, trainer D. Wayne Lukas said: "I agonized over 2 or 7 and, I thought it would be better for us if we were on the inside, because we do have good tactical speed and this puts Peace Rules and Funny Cide a little further out on the racetrack so maybe they'll have to be use them a

Trainer Bob Baffert entered Senor Swinger.
little bit more, so it was kind of a strategic decision. We've been lucky in this race before with horses that didn't do too well in the Derby, like Tabasco Cat and Tank's Prospect. We do well here. If our horses are going to move forward and they need to, I think we can be effective." He also has entered Ten Cents a Shine who will start from post five.

When asked why he selected the outside post 10 for Senor Swinger, trainer Bob Baffert said: "I've won from the outside a few times here so we can only get hit from one side, we won't get wiped out too bad like we did at the Derby." When asked about the turf to dirt change for Senor Swinger, he said: "Pat Day said he liked the dirt and said he would ride him and I decided I would take a chance."
