Dateline: 05/05/00Secret Status rallied from 13th early to win going away by 6 3/4 lengths over early pacesetter Rings a Chime. Classy Cara closed from last to get third in the contentious field. There was no clear cut favorite with the lowest odds being on Kumari Continent at 4.70-1 and Secret Status was a narrow second favorite at 4.90-1. The popularity of Oaks day continued to increase with a record attendance of 106,156, up about 5,000 from last year's previous record setting crowd.

Former President George Bush enjoyed the day at Churchill Downs. Here he is in the paddock prior to the Oaks with Tom Meeker, president and CEO of Churchill Downs Inc., and William Farish of Lane's End Farm. The winner, Secret Status, is one of Farish's horses.

The field for the Oaks passing the stands for the first time with Rings a Chime on the lead, Cash Run in second, and Spain in third.
Secret Status all alone at the finish. She was 6 3/4 lengths in front of second place Rings a Chime.
Secret Status wearing the winner's wreath of stargazer lilies. They are quite fragrant.
The trophy for the Oaks is a set of 12 sterling silver julep cups. Here is the presentation with former President Bush in the party along with Mr. Farish and winning jockey Pat Day.
Lukewarm favorite Kumari Continent in the post parade. She never seemed to get into the race at all.
Last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Cash Run in the post parade. She was in second until the stretch when she stopped badly and faded to 13th.
Other stakes on Oaks day:
Favorite King Cugat winning the Crown Royal American Turf going away by 2 3/4 lengths. Lendell Ray and Go Lib Go completed the trifecta.
The Louisville Breeders' Cup brought two previous Kentucky Oaks winners back to Churchill Downs but it was the red hot Heritage of Gold who won in 1:42.99 over Roza Robata and Bella Chiarra. Silverbulletday was fourth and Keeper Hill was fifth.
Bold Fact won wire to wire in the 5 furlong Aegon Turf Sprint over Howbaddouwantit and Fantastic Finish.
