Dateline: 05/03/02
20-1 longshot Farda Amiga rallied in the stretch to catch favorite Take Charge Lady and win the 128th Kentucky Oaks by 1 1/4 lengths. The race set up as expected with Take Charge Lady going to the front and controlling the pace. But when Farda Amiga, a daughter of Broad Brush, started her rally she was not to be denied. Habibti also mounted a mild rally to finish third over You who faded in the stretch to fourth. The Brazilian owners of Farda Amiga were jubiliant over their win with much yelling, chanting, and waving of the Brazilian flag. The winner had to survive an objection from third place finisher Habibti for alleged interference in the upper stretch, but it was disallowed.
The other important event on the card was the Louisville Breeders' Cup where Spain won to increase her earnings to a total of $3,304,244 breaking Serena's Song's record and making her the top North American distaff earner of all time.
