Kentucky Derby Workouts
Dateline: 05/03/01
On the Thursday morning before the 2001 Kentucky Derby, trainers had their Oaks and Derby starters out on the track for some last minute exercise. Although it's too late for timed works, many were out for a jog around the track. The backside was even more crowded with spectators than last year and the air nearly crackled with excitement.

Bob Baffert sent out his 9-5 Derby favorite Point Given for several laps around the track.

Stablemate and 5-1 second choice Congaree also came out for a gallop. The colt had a bit of fun playing around with his rider.

Florida Derby winner Monarchos schooled in the paddock before the first race.

Trainer David Hofmans sent out his Bluegrass Stakes winner Millennium Wind for an easy gallop.

Nick Zito trainee A P Valentine walked the shedrow.

Frank Stronach-owned Thunder Blitz being fed an apple by his groom.

James Cassidy's longshot Jamaican Rum out for a gallop.

Another longshot, Startac, getting some work in. Owner Madeleine Paulson was on hand to watch.

Kentucky Oaks favorite Fleet Renee was ponied around the track for some exercise.

Oaks entrant and 2000 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up Platinum Tiara grazes along the perimeter fence.

Canadian invader and 15-1 Oaks longshot Dancethruthedawn, a daughter of champion Dance Smartly, puts in a couple of laps for trainer Mark Frostad.

Anoterh Oaks entrant, Collect Call, gallops around the Churchill Downs oval.

John Kimmel sent his Oaks horse Latour out this morning.

Fair Grounds Oaks winner Real Cozzy munches some hay in her stall. She was supplemented into the Kentucky Oaks for $25,000

Bob Baffert also sent out his Dubai World Cup winner Captain Steve to jog around the track the wrong way a couple of laps.

Flame Thrower might have been a third Derby favorite for Baffert this year had he not gotten too late a start due to knee surgery late last year.
