Galleryfurniture.com Stakes
Dateline: 03/27/99
Turfway's signature Kentucky Derby prep (formerly known as the Jim Beam Stakes) was an interesting race this year. The purse was increased to $750,000 by the new sponsor, Jim McIngvale's Galleryfurniture.com, which attracted 174 nominees including some hot Kentucky Derby prospects. Nick Zito's lightly raced Stephen Got Even rallied from fifth to win by 2 and a half lengths. Madeleine Paulson's new purchase, K One King, raced second all the way around while Epic Honor rallied from far back for third. The Bob Baffert's Straight Man was the favorite and set the early pace but faded to fourth in the stretch.
