The Spiral Stakes

Dateline: 03/25/00

The Spiral once again proved that you never know what will happen as 2-1 favorite Archer City Slew faded in the stretch to finish 7th and 11.6-1 longshot Globalize won. Globalize had last finished 4th in the El Camino Real and again stalked the pace here but had plenty at the end to turn back Elite Mercedes and win by 1 1/2 lengths. Lightly raced Rollin With Nolan finished 3rd in an even effort. Your guess is as good as mine which of these may try to proceed down the Kentucky Derby trail.

The finish of the 2000 Spiral Stakes

As a special treat, Cigar made his first appearance at a track since retiring. He looked gorgeous and was quite full of himself. The pony girl had a handful trying to control him. He paraded the length of the stretch and then went to the winner's circle for an appearance. I have a separate page with 6 more photos of Cigar here.

Favorite Archer City Slew in the post parade. He set nice fractions but just couldn't sustain the speed.

Eventual winner Globalize in the post parade.

Elite Mercedes in the paddock. He redeemed himself from his poor showing in the Florida Derby.

Globalize and a jubilant Francisco Torres after winning the Spiral Stakes.

The happy connections in the winner's circle. Globalize is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and owned by Mr. Hollendorfer, Mr. Litt, and Mr. Todaro.

Globalize was not as pleased about the fuss, especially the flowers, and threw a fit until they were removed.

There were four other stakes on the card along with the Spiral:

The Queen Stakes for the older fillies and mares was won by odds-on favorite Hurricane Bertie with Pat Day up.

The Hansel Stakes for the 3 year olds was a tour de force for Caller One with Robbie Davis up. He won off by 10 lengths in 1:08.50 for 6 furlongs.

The Rushaway Stakes for the three year olds was a close finish between Ronton with Garrett Gomez up and Graeme Hall with Mike Smith up. Ronton, on the outside, won by a head.

The Bourbonette Breeders' Cup Stakes was won by favored Trip with Willie Martinez up.
