San Felipe Stakes
Dateline: 03/17/01
Point Given made it abundantly clear today that he has not lost any form from his juvenile season, winning the San Felipe Stakes with an impressive move down the backstretch easily overcoming his outclassed rivals. His final time for the 1 1/16 miles was a solid 1:41.94 on a fast track.
As expected he was sent off the heavy favorite at 2/5. He settled in behind the early pacesetters, running easily in 5th position, then took off on a five wide rally to gain the lead after 6 furlongs. He continued to power away from his rivals and won going away by 2 1/4 lengths. I Love Silver and Jamaican Rum rallied up from rear to pick up 2nd and 3rd respectively with the others all far back. The race was marred by the break down of Gold Trader who dueled with Silvertongue Fox for the early lead. He suffered a fractured cannon bone in a hind leg during the stretch run and had to be euthanized.

His trainer Bob Baffert said: "He was fit and he was ready for this race. When he made the lead last year, he'd just sort of throw his head up and wait on horses. Today, he took off. But like I said, he's a really good horse. He'll run much better next time." Next on the schedule for Point Given is the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on April 7th.
