This weekend another round of Triple Crown preps will be run in California, New York, and Florida. First off on Saturday at Santa Anita will be the $250,000 San Felipe Stakes (G2) at 1 1/16 miles where early Derby favorite Point Given will be making his 2001 debut. On Sunday you have the $200,000 Gotham Stakes (G3) at 1 mile at Aqueduct in New York and the $200,000 Tampa Bay Derby at 1 1/6 miles at Tampa Bay Downs in Florida. ESPN2 will show these on Sunday from 4:00-5:00pm EST or you can watch or listen live online.
Although not as high profile as last weekend's preps, these races are still important in the process of weeding out the field for this year's Kentucky Derby, especially the San Felipe because of Point Given. As an indication of their importance as preps, last year's Derby winner, Fusaichi Pegasus, came out of the San Felipe while Preakness winner Red Bullet came out of the Gotham.
