Late Nominees - closed on March 27.
The list of early nominations for the 2004 Triple Crown has been released and a total of 434 Thoroughbreds were nominated this year. This is a slight decrease from last year's record total of 446, but this is still the third largest in history. Nominations during the early period which closed on January 17 cost $600.
Despite the jinx involving that particular race, eight of the twelve starters in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) were nominated, including winner Action This Day. Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Halfbridled was one of seven fillies nominated as well as the second place finisher Ashado.
For the third year in a row, Ashado's trainer Todd Pletcher led all trainers with 35 nominations, followed by Nick Zito with 22, then D. Wayne Lukas and Bob Baffert with 19 each. Irish trainers Dermot Weld and Aidan O'Brien have 10 and 9 nominees respectively.
Michael Tabor of Coolmore leads all owners with 13 nominations, followed by Buckram Oak Farm and Overbrook Farm with nine each. A notable absence this year is Godophin Racing, an outfit whose main hope, Ruler's Court, was taken off the trail due to an injury while training in Dubai. The last three years they had nominated from 17 to 20 horses, so their defection had a large impact on the total number of nominations. Horses can still be nominated by March 27 during the late nomination period, but the fee is raised from $600 to $6000.
A.P. Indy is the most popular stallion on the list, with 16 of his progeny nominated. Storm Cat has 15 nominated, followed by 11 for Forestry and 10 from Saint Ballado.
