2000 Eclipse Award Winners

The 2000 Eclipse Awards were handed out on Tuesday January 30th. Unlike in past years, there were no surprises at all. As expected, Breeders' Cup winners dominated the winners' list with Classic winner Tiznow capturing both Champion Three Year-Old-Colt and Horse of the Year. The closest decision was in the male turf division, with Turf winner Kalanisi edging out Mile winner War Chant. Frank Stronach swept both the owner and breeder awards, but his trainer Joe Orseno lost out to Bobby Frankel in the trainer category.

In our online poll, Tiznow had 50% of the total votes cast for Horse of the Year but was second to Giant's Causeway by 1% in the 3 Year-Old-Colt voting. Our voters were wrong in the Turf Male category, voting for War Chant over John's Call with Kalanisi in third. Given the lack of surprises this year, our voters also correctly picked the winners of the 3 year old filly, older male, older female, turf female, 2 Year-Old-Colt, 2 Year-Old-Filly, Breeder, Owner, Jockey, and Apprentice Jockey. Our voters chose Orseno over Frankel for Trainer and Pompeyo over All Gong for Steeplechaser.

How the Awards are Decided

In the equine categories, each voting group's first choice counts 10 points, five points for second and one for third giving a maximum of 30 points. For the Horse of the Year vote, each group's favorite gets one point for a maximum of three points. In the human categories, each group receives one vote for a maximum of three.
