1999 Eclipse Award Winners

The winners were announced yesterday and most were no real surprise except for the older male division. The Horse of the Year dilemma was finally answered but still not really to anyone's satisfaction by giving it to Charismatic. Many voters did not believe any horse had done enough to deserve the honor and abstained from the voting. Charismatic carried the National Turf Writers Association and Daily Racing Form blocks while Daylami carried the NTRA block. Our poll wound up a bit differently with Artax getting 57%, Charismatic 37%, and Daylami only 6% of the 2419 votes cast. You can view the full results here.

How the Awards are Decided
In the equine categories, each voting group's first choice counts 10 points, five points for second and one for third giving a maximum of 30 points. For the Horse of the Year vote, each group's favorite gets one point for a maximum of three points. In the human categories, each group receives one vote for a maximum of three. The Outstanding Breeder is selected by a six-person panel, with points awarded as follows: 10-first, 5-second and 1-third.
