John Henry Day at the Kentucky Horse Park

The great champion John Henry will be honored on September 8, 2001, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The 26-year-old two time Horse of the Year and winner of over $6.5 million has resided at the park since his retirement in 1985. On Saturday September 8th all paid admissions will get a free John Henry poster and a ticket to a raffle for one of his halters. There will be a special ceremony after the 1pm Hall of Champions show with refreshments served afterwards.

Steve Haskins, author of the new book about John Henry, will be there signing his book for most of the day. Other special guests from John Henry's past will be on hand through out the day including his first trainer Phil Marino, his breeder Verna Lehmann, and his second owner Jean Callaway. Also hoping to attend are his last trainer Ron McAnally, jockey Bill Shoemaker, exercise rider Lewis Cenicola, groom Jose Mercado, and Bubba Snowden who owned him 3 times.

Artwork and racing memorabilia from John Henry's career will be on display in the barn and guests can purchase tickets for a chance to win a racing bridle like he wore when racing that he will wear while being presented to the public that day. Also expected is the NTRA Experience truck with exhibits and rides.

This should be an exciting day and one you shouldn't miss if you are (or can be) in the Lexington area that day.
