1998 Indiana Derby

First time past the stands

One Bold Stroke by a neck at the finish

A cold, sloppy track was the stage for the 4th running of the Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park, the first time that the 8½ furlong event was held at night. Eleven 3-year-olds contested for the $300,000 purse.

In a bit of a surprise at the break, Dixie Dot Com broke near the front, and quickly took the lead. David Flores kept Dixie on a short lead into the stretch, where he was headed by One Bold Stroke. Rallying from next-to-last position on the first grandstand pass, Robby Albarado drove One Bold Stroke between horses, getting up at the wire to win by a neck. Da Devil also closed from far back to be a distant third while favorite Scatmandu finished a disappointing 9th.
