TRACKMASTER'S COUNTDOWN TO THE BREEDER'S CUP
The Day of the Marathoners
by James QuinnHaving raised that notice, I like Kalinisi to win the BC Turf. The 4YO just defeated Montjeu by a half in the Gr.1 Champion Stakes at Newmarket at 5-1 in a 15-horse field that was loaded with talent. A review of Kalinisi's 2000 record shows two wins in five starts, but the losses tell the tale. After finishing 2nd off a year's layoff on May 15, Kalinisi next beat the top miler Dansili in the Gr. 2 Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot. He lost the next two by a head and another head in ruggedly driving finishes to Giant's Causeway, both Gr. 1's having purse values of $454,000.00 and $667,000.00, respectively, and two of the best races of the year in Europe. He then beat Montjeu. His last four Timeform ratings are 125, 130, 130, and 130, the last three marking Kalinisi as a special horse.
The other contenders are Ciro, Fruits of Love, Manndar, and Mutafaweg, and each can finish at the distance in 24 flat or faster. Ciro might be the irresistible overlay. A multiple Gr. 1 winner and improving winner of his last two, Ciro also fits a Lasix profile that is certain to be overlooked on the board. After winning the Gr.1 Lupin at Longchamp on May 14, Ciro lost by several lengths in the French Derby (Gr.1) and Irish Derby (Gr.1) prior to shipping to the states. He added Lasix ar Arlington Park and promptly won the Gr. 1 Secretariat Stakes for 3YOs. It's a winning Lasix pattern, an unexpected victory following two disappointing races, but excellent form just prior to that. The bad losses probably resulted from the bleeding. Ciro will be an attractive overlay in the BC Turf and he likes the marathon.
Horse that might be eliminated include Aly's Alley, Boatman, Craigsteel, Down The Aisle (form solid but a 7YO coming off a year's best), Fantastic Light (overrated), Montjeu (Form poor), and Mutamam. John's Call is unlikely but if he draws clear, he might upset; he likes the marathon and the pace might be sluggish.
In the trifectas, key Kalinisi and Ciro to win and place, and cover the other contenders and any others you prefer to place and to show. The payoff should be large.
