Eight Belles Tribute

Monday May 5, 2008
A photo tribute to the gallant filly Eight Belles who finished second to Big Brown in the 2008 Kentucky Derby, then tragically broke both front ankles about a quarter mile after the finish and had to be euthanized. She will be missed by many.

(2) For the Animals says:

She should be mourned as well. Horse racing is abusive to horses. Her death handed her owners a nice fat paycheck of $400,000, as her ankles shattered and she went down to her death insane with pain and confusion. This — along with Barbaro — is a shameful day for everyone involved with horse racing. These horses have no choice and are whipped to go faster and faster, the cost to the animal be damned.

Protest horseracing. Don’t abuse these animals.

Ugh, horse racing is a cruel “sport” that should wither away.

(4) Nancy Beachum says:

These horses are beautiful and are excited to run. However, they should wait till they are 4 or 5 when their legbones are more formed and they are not still babies!!!People should know better than to race babies when their legs and skeletal-muscular system is not mature yet.

(5) Patricia R. Osora says:

Eight Belles was a beautiful horse who, unfortunately, trusted the men who considered themselves her “family”. She obviously wasn’t ready for the Kentucky Derby and the “boys”. They tried to show what she could do to the world and now we have lost her forever. She was still a baby, shame on you.
