At a press conference this afternoon at Belmont Park, they announced he will be retired now rather than risk him developing an even worse injury. Trainer Doug O'Neill (show to the left with I'll Have Another after the press conference) said, "He's got tendonitis in his left front tendon. He's not 100 percent, and I ain't taking any chances." He continued, "I talked with Mr. [J. Paul] Reddam and immediately we got Dr. [Jim] Hunt over here. He scanned him and he said it was the start of tendonitis in his [superficial] left front tendon and ... you give him three to six months and then start back with him. But obviously, he's done so much, that it was unanimous to retire him. It's a bummer, but far from tragic."
I'll Have Another will have a retirement ceremony just before the Belmont Stakes.
