My first look at some of the top contenders for this year's Kentucky Derby on May 2, 2009. It is still very early and most of the top horses have not made their first start of the year, so expect things to change as the big day gets closer. Includes full profiles with a photo for horses.

Has there been any race horse yet to show signs of Big Brown’s racing skills for 2009?
I was very IMPRESSED with him at his first race.

yeah, he was retired last year with a cracked hoof right before the breeder’s cup. won’t see him race again, but the same stable (IEAH) has a contender in Stardom Bound.

So far nobody looks all that great. Friesan Fire was won two, but has had no real competition yet. Same for Haynesfield and Chocolate Candy. It will be interesting to see how Old Fashioned does on Monday at Oaklawn, but still he won’t have much competition. Too bad Midshipman and Vineyard Haven went to Dubai, they could have been the real deal but prepping there pretty much eliminates them before they even get started.

Strange situations have allowed me to pick out 6 Derby winners thru the last 10 years. It seems like each year one of my top three picks gets hurt before the Derby and does not make it. Which narrows my pick down to just two.One of my top three picks just happens to be SQUARE EDDIE! And what a sham the time he is missing at Oaklawn.I really believe that SQUARE EDDIE is suited far better for the Derby than OLD FASHIONED.And they should have already tested each other at Oaklawn. But im still hoping that SQUARE EDDIE regains form and gets his ability back to the track soon.

I see after-all that the REBEL and ARKANSAS DERBY did not need Square Eddie to knock off Old Fashioned. I had told many of the Daily Racing Form analysis that ( in my opinion ) Old Fashioned is too highly over rated to be on top for the early DERBY picture. That once he starts to add distance into his form, the worse he will respond. The Pedigree is not suited for the KENTUCKY DERBY, and im not bashing Old Fashioned. I just cant see why everyone is jumping on the band-wagon. I am a huge Pedigree believer when it comes to distace route races. Doesnt take a stud to sprint or go a mile………….. I hope that Jones re-thinks about Old Fashioned, and waits for the PREAKNESS, where at least has a chance to stay on the lead. I wonder how much money went into the wager pool on Old Fashioned! Hummmmmmmmm

I am crushed with sadness. Just when SQUARE EDDIE was looking so good, and nearing his true form coming to Churchill. Now the set-back again. Safty of ALL horses is a number 1 concern. And I am happy that owner-trainer will take the needed time to get SQUARE EDDIE regrouped and hopfully back on track. There is always the Canadian Triple Crown, though if EDDIE is dealing with this problem still with all the time off, the future does not look to bright as far as competing against G1 contenders. Dang-it, I really believed in this horse. And this will not change my feelings about him. His class what he did as a 2 yr old is breath-taking. GOOD LUCK SQUARE EDDIE and connections!
