Big Brown bounces back in the 2008 Haskell Invitational
Monday August 4, 2008
It wasn't pretty and he struggled a bit to get there, but Big Brown got up in the final strides to catch pacesetter Coal Play and win the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park by 1 3/4 lengths on Sunday. It was 4 more lengths back to Cool Coal Man in third. Get the results, chart, and photos here.

Big Brown doesn’t seem to be the same horse he was before the Belmont Stakes disaster. Perhaps it’s just one of those things that happens for no reason, but I find it strange. Big Brown is still a lovely horse. I think our desire to have another triple crown winner is prolonging the dry season. Perhaps Big Brown just isn’t a happy horse. Everyone expects too much from him.
We should also take in to consideration 2 thing’s. #1. It’s been 2 month’s sense BB has raced. #2. His other race’s were at much longer distance’s then the Haskell. If the Haskell had been 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 mile’s then we would have seen BB with a much larger lead on Coal play. BB is much like a rock rolling down a hill. Once he get’s started he continues to gain speed. He’s a very gutsy horse, and despite much disaproval he showed that he can dig down deep and get it done. Not to many out there that can still do that!
