Melbourne Cup Results

As per tradition, on the first Tuesday in November the Group 1 Melbourne Cup was contested at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria. Like the Kentucky Derby in America, the Melbourne Cup is "the race that stops a nation", with 122,736 fans in attendance at Flemington and millions elsewhere watching on television or listening on the radio. This year the 5-year-old mare Makybe Diva (right) burst through a hole in the stretch to win by 1 1/4 lengths over another mare, She's Archie. 11-2 favorite Mamool, owned by Godolphin Racing and ridden by Frankie Dettori, finished last, beaten 35 lengths.
